Steven Plummer designs books, from cover to cover. With over 20 years of specializing in book design. From custom and beautiful book covers, to book layouts, each book has to feel just right based on that book's personality, and that is always the aim. His love for books was born in the mid 90s where he first worked as a book printing prepress specialist. That is where he realized he wanted to be on the design side of the industry. After school where he studied design, and a year later after honing his skills every day and night, he landed his new career in a design studio whose specialty was books and catalogs. Publishing design has been his specialty ever since 2000.
All About Me
Growing as a book designer has been a journey. My love for books was first born in a book printing company back in the mid 90s as a teen. I admired many of the designs coming through our prepress department. Other designs game me the confidence that I could do better. One particular day at work I remember, after showing a design I had put together, I asked a very gifted artist if he thought I had a chance. He replied, "With a lot of work!". I took that to heart. I enrolled in school for a communication arts degree and began to work. The days of full time school and work were filled to the brim as I went after my dream. Following school, I would work on improving my design skills every chance I got. One year later I was hired as a graphic designer in a studio focused on publishing design. I have been designing books ever since.
Designing books, to me, is more than just producing a good looking book. It is much easier to produce a good looking book that has the wrong feel to it. The challenge is understanding the message and personality of each book, and translating that into the right feeling and face of that book's personality and still have it look great. This skill has been slowly growing over time with many successes and failures. I love the challenge and privilege of working on each and every project. I look forward to meeting every new client and love the challenge of each new book.
